AutoGen

Microsoft's multi-agent conversation framework, now maintenance-mode; consolidated with Semantic Kernel into the Microsoft Agent Framework (1.0 GA April 2026).

MIT · maintenance · Project site → · GitHub →

AutoGen began as a Microsoft Research framework for multi-agent conversations and role-playing agent patterns. As of 2026 it is maintenance-mode. Microsoft consolidated AutoGen and Semantic Kernel into the Microsoft Agent Framework, which reached 1.0 in April 2026. AutoGen continues to receive critical bug and security fixes but not significant new features, and new projects are pointed at the Microsoft Agent Framework instead. The relevant correction for anyone surveying the agent layer is that AutoGen is no longer the current Microsoft agent framework, and neither is Semantic Kernel; both fed into one successor. For the build-it-yourself comparison, see the Microsoft Agent Framework entry rather than this one.
